Serving Joy at a Maiyan Ceremony: Our Ice Cream Scoop Station at a Sikh Pre-Wedding Celebration

Serving Joy at a Maiyan Ceremony: Our Ice Cream Scoop Station at a Sikh Pre-Wedding Celebration

Some events we cater stay with us long after the last scoop is served. This was one of them.

In December 2025, the Softsrve team had the honour of bringing our ice cream scoop station to a Maiyan ceremony — a traditional Punjabi Sikh pre-wedding celebration — hosted by the lovely Natasia at the Sunway Serene multipurpose hall in Petaling Jaya. For 3 hours, we served 120 guests amid the music, the dancing, and the colour. And we left feeling like we had received far more than we gave.

What Is a Maiyan Ceremony?

If you've never attended one, the Maiyan (sometimes spelled Mayian or Maiya) is one of the most joyful pre-wedding rituals in Punjabi Sikh culture. Held a day or two before the wedding, family and close friends gather at the home of the bride or groom to apply a turmeric-based paste — believed to bring blessings, good fortune, and a radiant glow for the big day.

But the Maiyan is so much more than the ritual itself. It's music. It's folk songs. It's aunties and cousins dancing with an energy that fills the whole house. It's a sea of brilliant yellows, oranges, and pinks — phulkari shawls, marigold decorations, and smiles everywhere you look.

We arrived as caterers. We left feeling like guests at a family celebration.

Ice Cream Knows No Boundaries

Here's what we love most about what we do.

Malaysia is home to so many beautiful cultures — Malay, Chinese, Indian, Punjabi, and many more — each with their own ceremonies, traditions, and ways of celebrating love. Through our scoop station events, we've been welcomed into weddings, kenduris, dinners, and celebrations across all of them.

And honestly? If it weren't for these events, we would never have learned about traditions like the Maiyan firsthand. Every celebration teaches us something new about our neighbours, our community, and what makes Malaysia truly special.

Cultures may differ, but the moment someone takes that first bite of ice cream — the smile is universal. Ice cream knows no boundaries. It belongs at every celebration, in every culture.

Why a Scoop Station Works Beautifully for Maiyan & Punjabi Weddings

Maiyan ceremonies are warm — literally and figuratively. With 120 guests dancing and celebrating over 3 lively hours at Sunway Serene, a live ice cream scoop station was the perfect refresher between performances and rituals.

A few reasons our clients love it for Punjabi and Sikh wedding events:

  • Kurang manis (lower sugar) recipes — guests of all ages can enjoy generous servings without it feeling heavy or jelak
  • Vegetarian-friendly flavours available — important for many Sikh families; just let us know your requirements when booking
  • Live, interactive serving — the scoop station becomes part of the celebration, not just a dessert table
  • 24+ artisan flavours to mix and match, from Pandan Coconut to Oolong Tea to classics like Deep Chocolate
  • We handle everything — setup, serving, and dismantle, so the family can focus on the ceremony

A Heartfelt Thank You

To Natasia and family — thank you. Thank you for trusting us with your celebration, for the warmth you showed our team, and for letting us witness such a beautiful tradition up close.

We are so blessed to do what we do, in a country where every month brings a different festival, a different ceremony, a different reason to celebrate together. This is the Malaysia we love.
